Denver attorney Robert Corry told the crowd at the National Marijuana Business Conference that President Barack Obama sent a signal about marijuana when he made a record number of campaign visits to the battleground state this year and never talked about the marijuana vote.

“Silence equals consent. The time for the federal government to talk about marijuana legalization is over. The election has passed,” Corry said to applause from the crowd. “Marijuana got 50,000 more votes than Obama on Tuesday. Don’t think they didn’t notice that.”

Robert Corry and Travis Simpson secured another NOT GUILTY verdict in Otero County District Court this evening after over 8 hours of jury deliberation, freeing Marcelina Arnold from charges of Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute Five to One Hundred Pounds of Marijuana. Mr. Arnold, a medical marijuana patient and primary caregiver, was arrested by Colorado State Patrol officers after a traffic stop on October 28, 2010. Two years ago, CSP officers seized Mr. Arnold’s expertly crafted strains of medical marijuana, such as Punkalino’s Pride and Purpalino. Tonight, Mr. Corry and Mr. Simpson reseized all of Mr. Arnold and his patients’ medicine after a four day jury trial and freed Mr. Arnold from his serious felony charge

Q&A with Sculpture Winner Travis Simpson

Art and lawyering seem to draw on very different skills and different parts of the brain. How do you think being a lawyer helps your art, or vice versa?

Art and lawyering compliment each other very well. First and foremost, lawyering itself is an art. There is certainly an art to trying a felony marijuana cultivation trial. There are many factors and decisions to balance; who to pick for the jury, what evidence to admit, what evidence to suppress, what witnesses to call, when to object, and every tiny detail down to what your client is wearing to court. The same is true for sculpture, painting, and any other art form. As an artist and a trial lawyer, you control the production, and you are the director. It’s your show and every decision you make reflects upon your own personal style and technique.

The other way art and lawyering compliment each other is that art is an amazing way to stop thinking about the law after a long day of lawyering. When lawyers love their work, as I do, it is hard to stop thinking about your clients’ cases or upcoming trials. However, you must take breaks to avoid burning out. For me, sculpting and painting is an amazing way to give my brain a break from lawyering and exercise the other side of my brain. By exercising both sides of my brain, I feel more balanced and I feel that this increased flexibility of mind is both an asset to our clients as well as beneficial to my artistic expressions.

Marijuana Must Be Legalized

It is 5:00 a.m. on a cold dark Colorado morning. Twenty-five SWAT team officers, clad in black helmets, body armor, wielding assault weapons, large clear shields, and heavy iron battering rams, surround a quiet residential home, shatter the front door, and throw flash-bang grenades and tear gas inside.

The team of 25 militarized cops stream into the house, screaming obscenities, shattering the terrified childrens’ sleep and jarring the scared parents awake. The SWAT team then literally destroys the home and the furniture within, slashing couches, overturning bookcases, throwing possessions all over the floor, carting the crying children off to Social Services or foster care, and throwing the parents to the ground at gunpoint, handcuffing them painfully before carting them off to the police station.

The SWAT team then locates its target: a couple dozen three-foot high cannabis plants in a modest indoor basement garden, and a pound or so of dried plant matter, some lights, some fertilizer, and a few books on how to grow marijuana.

This is not an extreme example. This scene literally happens every day in America… (read more)

Lawyer says medical marijuana dispensaries should ignore threat from feds

Federal officials have begun a crackdown on medical marijuana dispensaries in Colorado that targets those located near schools.

U.S. Attorney John Walsh said 23 dispensaries within 1,000 feet of schools have until Feb. 27 to shut down or face federal penalties, which can include asset seizure or forfeiture of property. Walsh’s office declined to release a list of targeted businesses but says there will be more letters sent out in the future.
